Assistant Professor, Washington College (Maryland)
Physicist on the ATLAS Experiment at CERN's Large Hadron Collider
Suyog Shrestha is an assistant professor of physics at Washington College and a research scientist on the ATLAS Collaboration at CERN. He contributed to the Nobel Prize-winning discovery of the Higgs boson at the Large Hadron Collider in 2012, and in 2025 the ATLAS and CMS collaborations were further honored with the Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics for their contributions to Higgs boson research. His work investigates fundamental questions about the universe, including the nature of the Higgs boson, electroweak symmetry breaking, and the search for new particles beyond the Standard Model. Supported by an NSF LEAPS-MPS award, his research combines particle physics, machine learning, and large-scale data analysis to explore new phenomena at the energy frontier. Equally committed to education and mentorship, he works with high school, undergraduate, and graduate students, helping them develop skills in programming, data science, artificial intelligence, and scientific research using real data from CERN.
